KHORUGH, Tajikistan – A prosecutor has demanded long prison terms for two suspects in the high-profile killing of a top security official in Tajikistan's restive Gorno-Badakhshan region.

At the hearing's last day on February 26 in the southeastern province's capital, Khorugh, the prosecutor asked that Odil Ayombekov be imprisoned for 17 years and Hamza Murodov receive 16 years for killing regional security chief Abdullo Nazarov last summer.

The defendant's lawyers claim that Nazarov's death was unintentional manslaughter.

The judge is expected to announce the verdict and sentence on February 27.

Tajik government forces conducted a military operation against the two defendants' armed supporters following Nazarov's killing.

The authorities say 13 security officers and 30 militants were killed in the operation, which lasted for several weeks.
