Please find attached a document that provides information on the asylum procedures and programs in Spain during the 1980s. For updated information on asylum procedures in Spain and additional information on the subject, please consult Responses to Information Requests ESP17986.E of 21 July 1994, and ESP9407, ESP9408 and ESP9409 of 19 September 1991.

The secretary general of the Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado (CEAR, described in the attached section of Asylum in Europe) stated that during the specified period, Spain has not had any special policy, program or treatment for Iranian asylum seekers (27 Oct. 1994). Spain normally evaluates asylum claims on an individual basis; when granted asylum, the refugee becomes a resident of Spain and receives a work permit, and normally there is no need for protection beyond that enjoyed by the general population (ibid.).

Statistics on Iranian asylum claimants in Spain could not be obtained in time to meet the deadline for this response.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
