Sources report that on 9 September 2009, there was a fire at St. Jude Hospital (St. Jude Hospital 16 Sept. 2009; Saint Lucia 9 Sept. 2011; St. Lucia Star 12 Sept. 2011). According to information posted on the website of St. Jude Hospital, the fire destroyed an operating theatre, the surgical ward and the paediatric wing of the hospital (St. Jude Hospital 16 Sept. 2009). Three people also died as a result of the fire (ibid.; St. Lucia Star 12 Sept. 2011). Sources indicate that the medical services of St. Jude Hospital temporarily relocated to the George Odlum Stadium following the fire (ibid.; Saint Lucia 9 Sept. 2011). As of September 2011, the reconstruction of the hospital was not yet complete and the hospital continued to operate from the temporary location (ibid.; St. Lucia Star 12 Sept. 2011).
Nevertheless, in a telephone interview with the Research Directorate, the Medical Director at St. Jude Hospital explained that the fire did not generally affect the ability of administrators to provide medical records to patients requesting their records (19 Jan. 2012). He said that the fire did not destroy any of the patients' medical records (St. Jude Hospital 19 Jan. 2012). He noted that for a "short window" of time following the fire, when the hospital was re-organizing, the ability of patients to access their records may have been affected (ibid.). However, he maintained that this period of time did not last for more than two months at a maximum (ibid.).
