According to an official of the Italian consulate general in Toronto, a "Permesso di Soggiorno" is a permit/visa to enter Italy for the duration specified in the permit, and a single entry permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) does not entitle a person to leave and return without a new visa (1 Nov. 1994). Persons who wish to enter Italy on a "Permesso di Soggiorno" without a new permit/visa will require a multiple entry permit/visa (ibid.). In order to obtain a multiple entry permit/visa a person must provide the previous permit and the reasons for leaving Italy (ibid.). Applications for the multiple entry permit/visa can be filed within Italy at the nearest Italian police station, and applicants outside Italy can file their applications at the nearest Italian mission (ibid.). The DIRB is unable to corroborate this information at the present time.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
