In addition to the information provided in previous responses, the Ecumenical Centre of Human Rights (CEDHE) in Quito provided the information that follows (23 Feb. 1993).

Military service is compulsory for all males in Ecuador, although some individuals may fall under exemption provisions. Those who are not exempt from military service and do not perform it must pay a fine. The document entitled Autorización Militar Para Salir del País (military authorization for leaving the country) is required from all males when applying for a passport or when leaving the country.
