The attached reports indicate that a law on citizenship came into effect in Uzbekistan in July 1992 (Russian Press Digest 6 Aug. 1992; BBC Summary 1 Aug. 1992; Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe Jan. 1993). According to a report carried by the BBC Summary of World Broadcasts, "[i]mmigrants can obtain Uzbek citizenship if they give up their foreign citizenship and have been living in Uzbekistan for the last five years" (1 Aug. 1992).

Uzbekistan currently has no diplomatic representatives in Canada who could comment on the application of the citizenship law.

Additional and/or corroborating information on this subject is not currently available to the DIRB.
