The following information was provided to the DIRB by the Second Secretary of the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic in Ottawa in a 21 November 1994 letter sent to the DIRB and during a 24 November 1994 telephone interview.
According to the legislation pertaining to the granting of Greek citizenship to foreigners, Albanian citizens of Greek origin can apply for Greek citizenship (21 Nov. 1994).
To apply for Greek citizenship, an Albanian citizen of Greek origin residing in Greece must complete a citizenship application form at the mayor's office of the city where he or she resides (24 Nov. 1994). In addition, the applicant must submit a birth certificate and documents indicating the applicant's marital status and any criminal record (ibid.). The citizenship application form and attached documents will then be forwarded to the Ministry of Interior (ibid.). The Second Secretary was unable to comment on how long it would take for the applicant to receive a reply from the Ministry of Interior (ibid).
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
