According to an official of the Embassy of the Republic of Burkina Fasso in Washington, DC, a person whose parents were born in Burkina Fasso is automatically a Burkinabe (a national of Burkina Fasso) (13 Jan. 1994). If the parents are not Burkinabes but the applicant is at least 21 years of age and has lived in Burkina Fasso for at least 10 years, the applicant qualifies for Burkina Fasso nationality.

All applicants living in Burkina Fasso must send their applications to the Ministry of Land Administration in Ougadougou. The applications must be accompanied by the applicant's birth certificate, and those of both parents or other proof of the parents' nationality. A fee must be paid upon application, but the official was not sure of the actual amount (ibid.). With regard to applicants living outside Burkina Fasso, all applications must be sent to the nearest embassy for processing (ibid.).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
