According to a representative of the Embassy of Egypt in Ottawa, a person born in the Gaza Strip in 1967 who has resided in the United Arab Emirates since 1980, and who was granted an Egytian travel document in 1990 which is valid until 1995 does not have the right to reside in Egypt (2 Sept. 1993). The representative added that if the person wants to obtain a visitor's visa, the request must be approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cairo (Ibid.). A transit permit through an Egyptian airport for another country would be difficult to obtain (Ibid.). A representative of the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington stated that a person holding an Egyptian travel document does not have the right either to reside or to visit the country, even if the person has been a resident of the UAE for ten or twenty years (2 Sept. 1993). The representative reported that if the person holds a valid passport, the request for a residence permit would be examined (Ibid.). According to an article on the legal status of Palestinians in the Middle East, since 1991 it has been very difficult for Palestinians to obtain entry visas to Egypt (Revue d'études Palestiniennes 1993, 46). People from the Gaza Strip holding an Egyptian residence permits have only been able to receive transit visas through Egypt (Ibid.). For further information on Palestinians in Egypt, please refer to the attached article.
