According to the UNHCR Kenya,
The Barawan camp...was known as Hatimy Refugee Camp...It was established in 1992 and closed down in 1997. The name Hatimy was derived from the owner of the land who offered its usage for the local refugees, a Mr. Hatimy, whilst the name Barawan is a description derived of the Somali clan which comprised the camp. It was situated 18 kms North of Mombasa Island before the Mwtapa Creek.
The camp had four zones altogether with a population of about 4,500 persons, namely zones A,B,C and D. Hatimy Camp was closed down in 1997 with the resettlement of most of its residents to the United States of America and relocation of its remaining population to Kakuma Camp in the north-west of Kenya (UNHCR Ottawa, 24. Aug. 1998).
