In a 26 September 1997 telephone interview, a representative with the Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO) in San Salvador stated that the Hospital of San Miguel offers complete kidney dialysis treatment while the Salvadorean Social Security Institute (ISSS) offers only minimal treatment. The representative did not elaborate on what she means by minimal treatment (ibid.).
With reference to the treatment available for kidney dialysis in El Salvador, a Salvadoran man on kidney dialysis awaiting deportation by the United States is quoted in the attached 14 April 1997 U.S. News & World Report article that he would "last less than two months" because of the kidney dialysis standard in his own country.
