The largest of the approximately 20 ethnic Ukrainian organizations in Poland is the Union of Ukrainians in Poland (UUP) (PAP 15 Dec. 1993). Recent reports indicate that the UUP has focused its efforts around obtaining restitution for property taken from Ukrainians who were forcibly resettled from southeastern to western Poland in 1947, an event known as the "Wisla operation" (ibid.; ibid. 28 Dec. 1992; Polish News Bulletin 11 Jan. 1994; ibid. 18 Aug. 1992).

Country Reports 1992 indicates that "several Ukrainian schools and Ukrainian newspapers opened in 1992. Some Ukrainian communities complained, however, that local authorities did not provide sufficient levels of support" (1993, 867).

A September 1993 report refers to ethnic Ukrainians participating in a "church fair held annually in the Greek-Catholic parish" of the northwestern town of Bialy Bor (PAP 19 Sept. 1993).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
