For information on mandatory military service in Poland, its duration, the age of registration, the alternative to military service, exemptions and the consequences for unwillingness to perform military service duty, please consult the attached 30 November 1995 facsimile sent to the DIRB by the Defense Attaché of the Embassy of Poland in Ottawa. The attached PAP News Wire articles cover prosecution of people who objected to military service or served in a foreign army, and on the likelihood of a the length of military service being shortened.

The Defense Attaché told the DIRB during a 30 November 1995 telephone interview that all Polish citizens with permanent residence in Poland are required to register for military service and that the rule also applies to the Romas with Polish citizenship residing in Poland.              This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
