The information that follows was provided by a Senior Counsellor at the Embassy of Ecuador in Ottawa (28 July 1992). Additional and/or corroborating information from non-government sources could not be found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC.

The certificate of naturalization is the proof of acquisition of Ecuadorean nationality. It is issued by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Ministry of External Affairs) after the foreign applicant has submitted certain documents, undergone an interview and passed an exam on general knowledge of Ecuador (geography, civic affairs, etc.).

Foreign permanent residents of Ecuador who have resided five or more years in the country may apply for naturalization. To verify their eligibility, their length of residence and police record would normally be checked.

A foreigner must renounce any other nationality in order to acquire Ecuadorean nationality. This is done by signing a declaration of renunciation of nationality at the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Ministry of External Affairs). The Ecuadorean government does not require permission or consent of another country to grant Ecuadorean nationality to an individual.

For additional information on eligibility requirements for naturalization, please refer to your copy of the Constitution of Ecuador, Response to Information Request ECU11317 (28 July 1992) and related, previous Responses to Information Requests on the subject.
