In addition to the above, a recent issue of Hoja de Datos, reporting on assistance centres for abused women in Latin America, provides information on two centres in El Salvador (June 1994, 5). One centre is the Clinica de Atención a las Mujeres Maltratadas (Abused Women's Assistance Clinic), of the non-governmental Woman's Studies Institute "Norma Virginia Guirola de Herrera," CEMUJER. Its goal is the promotion of education devoid of gender-based inequalities and the eradication of all forms of violence and aggression against women. Its main activities are the provision of psychological help and legal guidance to women who are victims of violence. The centre also has self-help groups, training, a gymnasium for women, and a school of human rights and legal education.

The other centre described in the publication is the Centro de Asistencia Legal para la Mujer Salvadoreña (Legal Aid Centre for the Salvadoran Woman). It is a non-governmental organization that was founded in 1989 as an attached department of the Instituto de Investigación, Capacitación y Desarrollo de la Mujer, IMU (Woman's Institute for Research, Training and Development). Its stated goal is to find legal answers to the problems and needs faced by women. Its main activities are carried out by the Juridical Department, and include assisting in cases of domestic violence and sexual assault, labour problems, women's rights, citizen's rights and irresponsible parenthood. The centre also carries out training and social outreach activities.

Please find attached two documents that provide additional information on organizations and services available to women who are victims of sexual or domestic abuse.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
