According to the Africa Research Bulletin (1-30 June 1991), hundreds of Somalis were rounded up on 16 June 1991 reportedly to screen those people entering Kenya illegally (Ibid., 10175). An article in Africa Events (Sept. 1992) further reports that Somali refugees in Kenya have been the object of abuse and harassment by Kenyan police:
On the weekend of August 15/16, the police burst into the temporary homes of 2,000 Somali and Ethiopian refugees in Nairobi and Mombasa, rounded them up, forced them to board lorries at gunpoint after which they were driven to refugee camps. Families were separated and many small children left abandoned. The police were apparently in search of any "Somali-looking person" in areas with large groups, such as Eastleigh, South C and Koma Rock (Ibid., 8).
