According to a representative of the Embassy of Jordan in Ottawa, once the young man is eighteen years old, he must obtain a clearance (permission?) from the military authorities (5 May 1993). The representative added that since the Jordanian Army does not take any new recruits, postponements of military service are easily available (Ibid.). This situation is mainly due to the high number of returnees from the Gulf states who found themselves unemployed and saw military service as a source of income (Ibid.). The representative reported that the young man would need his military booklet stamped (meaning that postponement has been approved) before leaving the country (Ibid.). Postponement of military service can be extended from abroad by sending a request to Jordan (Ibid.).
Additional and/or corroborating information on this subject is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa.
