A representative of the High Commission of India in Ottawa states that, regardless of their nationalities, foreigners who wish to reside in India for a long period of time for purposes other than tourism are required to register with the Foreigners Registration Office Security Control (12 Oct. 1993). Tourists who wish to stay in India after the expiry of their visas must also register with the office (Ibid.). The representative adds that, depending on the nature of each case, individuals who fail to register will be expelled and some may also be jailed before expulsion. The duration of imprisonment depends on the specifics of each case (Ibid.).
