No information on the smuggling of Tamils to Singapore is currently available to the IRBDC in Ottawa. An article on the Singaporean Indian community, however, indicates that the Sri Lankan Tamils remain socially apart from the rest of society (Balakrishnan, p.13). The penalties against illegal immigrants in Singapore, moreover, were recently increased to an important fine and a physical punishment (Sabatier, p.19). Over the past few years, Singapore has been trying to put an end to the flow of illegal immigrants from South Asia by imprisoning them and imposing visas on their entry into the island city ("Visa Protest").
