The information contained in this Response was provided by a representative of the Zambian Mission to the United Nations in New York, during a telephone interview with the IRBDC (14 September 1992). The representative stated that Zambia occasionally expels individuals who have entered Zambia illegally or whose visas have expired. The representative explained that the government would also expel foreigners if they were convicted of a crime in a court of law. Reports by the BBC Summary of World Broadcasts (BBC Summary 17 June 1989; 1 Feb. 1983), corroborate this information. According to one of the reports, President Kaunda ordered a "purge" of foreigners who he claimed were "doing great harm to the country by robbing it of its wealth" (17 June 1992). Another report states that at the end of 1982, the government reportedly rounded up 3,300 aliens and repatriated them to their countries of origin (Ibid. 1 Feb. 1992).

The representative, however, could not comment on the expulsion of Zambian nationals. For additional information on this topic, please refer to the attached documents.
