In a telephone interview on 13 June 1995 an official at the Gambian embassy in Washington stated that Gambia has a refugee determination system. The official, however, could not provide any information about the system (ibid.).
According to World Refugee Report, "The Gambia has drafted legislation on refugees which will establish a commission for refugees, qualifications for registration of refugees, their rights and privileges, and procedures for naturalization" (July 1993, 26). According to the Handbook on Procedures and Criteria for Determining Refugee Status, Gambia is a signatory to the 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees (Sept. 1979, 86).
Additional and/or corroborating information could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.
