Information concerning government policies regarding illegitimate children, and unwed or single mothers, additional to that found in CHN21168.E of 5 July 1995 is scarce among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

While commenting on proposed amendments to the Marriage Law, Xu Weihua of the All-China Women's Federation, stated that reform was necessary because divorce was too easy under the existing law, a situation that ill-served women's rights, as many divorced women "became single mothers and poor" (2 Aug. 1998).

No further information concerning government policies regarding illegitimate children, and unwed or single mothers could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints.
