Flooding Hits Kakuma

On 11 August Kakuma was inundated with torrential rains which caused flooding in various parts of the camp and surrounding areas. Many refugee shelters were destroyed and dykes and river banks were severely eroded in a number of locations placing refugees and humanitarian workers at risk. A vehicle ferrying passengers from Lokichoggio to Kakuma was washed away while trying to cross a seasonal river in Turkana West District, and 8 people lost their lives; it is believed that some among the dead were Sudanese on their way to Kakuma to seek asylum....

Progress on the Opening of the Community Technology Access Centre in Kakuma

On 17 August UNHCR Kakuma hosted a visit by Mr. Allan Torrie, president and CEO of Morneau Shepell, a Canadian human resource consulting company which is emerging as one of Kakuma's primary private donors. Morneau Shepell is currently funding the construction of a Community Technology Access Centre (CTA), which will provide computer literacy training and advanced courses in the IT field to refugees in Kakuma. The CTA is expected to begin operation in the coming months and will be managed by UNHCR's implementing partner, Salesians of Don Bosco. It is hoped the centre will be expanded to incorporate other vocational training programs. During his brief stay in Kakuma Mr. Torrie also visited the Reception Centre, spoke to recent arrivals who had just been settled in the camp community, and had a tour of Don Bosco's vocational training centre. Joint Protection Mission to Kakuma

A mission is being organized from 24 August to 2 September to assess the key protection and displacement concerns in relation to the current drought facing the Turkana region of Kenya. The mission will assess the capacity of UNHCR and partners to respond to the protection concerns of those affected by the drought and will identify key areas where attention is needed. The mission is expected to involve representatives from UNHCR, OCHA, IOM, UNWOMEN, and the Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). ...

Assessment Mission on Climate Change

Planning is underway for a mission by UNHCR colleagues in early October to undertake an assessment of the environmental situation in the Turkana region of Kenya with the aim of developing a long-term strategy for mainstreaming climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction into UNHCR operations.
