15 May 2016 - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the African Union Commission today welcomed the peaceful conduct of the partial re-run for the elections of President of Comoros and Governor of Anjouan.
In a joint statement issued by Mr. Ban's spokesperson in New York, the UN chief and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, congratulated the people of Comoros for participating peacefully in the election and in the subsequent partial re-run, which was observed by an African Union (AU) Election Observer Mission.
“The Secretary-General and the Chairperson commend the relevant national institutions for the orderly organization of the partial re-run. The same national institutions now have a vital role to ensure that the final results are a true reflection of the will of the people of Comoros,” the statement said.
The officials also encouraged the Constitutional Court to release the final results in a “transparent and timely manner.”
Calling on all candidates to exercise restraint and show a sense of responsibility, as well as to work towards the interest of the people of Comoros and to maintain stability, the Secretary-General and the Chairperson also underlined the responsibility of the Government to ensure a peaceful conclusion of the electoral process.
