Muna and Sakina were forced by violence to flee their home in the city of Sa’ada in Yemen last year, with their mother and three siblings. They found refuge at the Dharwan settlement, after their father was killed - he is one of more than 7,000 lives taken by Yemen’s brutal war. The conflict is dealing a harsh blow to civilians, with an average of 75 people killed or injured daily.

Standing with his grandson outside his shelter in Azraq refugee camp Jordan, a dignified elderly man called Abu Kareem shows us his most precious possession. It's a painting of his beloved home in Homs, Syria - a house he built with his own hands .
A family man, Kareem is an inventor who created amazing and useful objects from cast-off material he found in the desert camp. "Please tell my story", he asks us .
Uprooted from his home, he dreams of one day returning. We dearly hope that one day Abu sees his home again.

Happy Christmas from all of us, to all celebrating today, especially the many millions marking the day forced far from home.

Afghan teacher Aqeela Asifi, who won the 2015 Nansen Refugee Award for her dedicated work providing education to refugee girls, has expanded a small school in Kot Chandana, Pakistan .
Thanks to Aqeela’s investment in three new classrooms, a washroom and a fully-equipped science laboratory, the first class of ninth grade girls now have a space to continue learning. This little girl is among the 1.34 million Afghan refugees living in Pakistan .
Access to education is considered to be a vital tool in enabling successful repatriation, resettlement or local integration.

Little Yacoubou watches as his mother, forty-seven-year old Rahia, repairs the fence of their compound. Rahia and her four children, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram for a year and a half, still suffer nightmares from the trauma they experienced. Once released, mother and children fled to Cameroon and have sought safety in Minawao refugee camp.

The Boko Harma insurgency has displaced 1.8 million people in Nigeria and over 200,000 others who have fled to Cameroon, Chad and Niger. In the far north region of Cameroon, Minawao camp hosts over 60,000 Nigerian refugees .
Women and children pay the highest price in this humanitarian crisis as they are targeted by Boko Haram in kidnappings and for recruitment into the militia.

“UNHCR and its aid partners need to continue to develop income-generation activities, especially for women, in order for them to be self-sufficient. This is what they asked of us and it should not be beyond the international community’s means to deliver” .
During his visit to the Lake Chad region in West Africa last week, our High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi met with some of the more than million people who have been displaced from their homes due to the Boko Haram insurgency. Here he met with a Nigerian baby in a nutrition center in Minawao camp in Cameroon .
Grandi visited the region to highlight the displacement crisis, he also launched a $241 million funding appeal to help the men, women and children who have found refuge in various camps in the region - a region that is struggling to support a humanitarian crisis.
He was impressed by the resilience of a people who have suffered greatly, yet remain hopeful .
Only 43% of the funds required by aid agencies has been received. More support is needed to adequately assist these families that have been shattered by violence so that they can rebuild their lives .

UNHCR High Profile Supporter @iamkristindavis walks alongside Beatrice through Gihembe camp, Rwanda.
When she was just 5 years old Beatrice fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo for Rwanda. Twenty years on she would love to learn a technical skill so she can make a living, and is hoping to be resettled in the US.
There are over 12,995 refugees in Gihembe camp of whom 97% are Congolese.

Our High Profile Supporter @iamkristindavis plays with baby Jeannine at Mahama refugee camp in Rwanda.

Eight hundred children in Mahama are unaccompanied by any adult relative. Because they are some of the most vulnerable, we provide them with basic needs like access to shelter, nutrition and health care, but also make sure they are matched with foster families who can take care of them until they can be reunited with their family members.

During a recent trip with UNHCR to Mahama refugee camp in Rwanda, UNHCR High Profile Supporter @iamkristindavis met with Burundian refugee women .
They showed Kristin Davis some of the baskets they had woven and other handicrafts they had made as part of a UNHCR self-reliance program and which will then be sold in the United States .
There are over 50,054 refugees in Mahama camp, most of whom have been there since April 2015 .

"Atrocities have been allowed to become commonplace. So many lives have been lost. There is grave risk now that such displacement and suffering will not stop, but will be repeated elsewhere, in other wars. For the sake of civilian protection everywhere, Syria’s conflict must be ended, now, and without delay.”
Aleppo has become a metaphor for the disastrous situation that Syria is in today. This is our High Commissioner's message to the world today.

With her own life in danger, Manal made a decision no mother should have to make: she fled from Syria and found safety in Denmark. She then turned to people smugglers with the hope of seeing her family once again.
Manal’s world collapsed as a news report that the boat carrying her children broke down during the crossing from Turkey to Lesvos.
Then, a message appeared in Manal’s Facebook inbox. It was short and from a stranger, but still the most precious message a mother could receive: “Your children are alive. They are in Turkey.”
Manal and her three children, Karam, Joudy and Sarah have now been in Denmark for 11 months, but decisions on family reunion and the children’s asylum applications are still pending.

We are extremely concerned about people who have fled violence in Eastern Aleppo and those unable to leave besieged areas.
These people include vulnerable women, children and elderly, many of whom are sick or hungry.

We call on all parties in the conflict to abide by international humanitarian law and to ensure protection, respect and dignity to those who have been forced to flee their homes.
