Armenia
Armenia has an uneven record on human rights. Authorities continue to interfere with peaceful protests and torture and ill treatment in custody remain a problem. Investigations of these crimes – even when opened - are ineffective. Journalists have faced pressure and violence over their work. Serious abuses in the army persist, despite reforms allowing alternatives to compulsory military service. Forced hospitalization of those with psychiatric disorders remains problematic. Violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity are serious concerns. The government has yet to lift unnecessary restrictions on access to pain medications for people with terminal illnesses.
