Greek volunteer sea rescue team - joint winners Nansen Refugee Award 2016
The Nansen Refugee Award is UNHCR's top honour – recognising the unsung heroes who go beyond the call of duty for refugees.
The 2,000 strong volunteer Hellenic Rescue Team is credited with saving thousands of lives in Greece during the 2015 refugee crisis. They were named joint winners for their round-the-clock efforts for refugees and migrants in distress at sea.
The award recognizes the work of volunteers and people in Europe and around the world in 2015, and those who continue to welcome refugees in their communities.
