UNHCR Representative Visits Southern Provinces of Kyrgyzstan

Osh, 7-8 April 2015 (UNHCR) – United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative in Kyrgyz Republic, Ms. Maki Shinohara has visited Jalal-Abad and Osh provinces.

In Osh she met with the Head of Plenipotentiary Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic for the South, Governor of Osh province, Mr. Sooronbai Jeenbekov, representative of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Head of Local Self-governance Agency, and Representative of Ombudsman.In Jalal-Abad, Ms. Shinohara had meetings with the Governor of Jalal-Abad province, Ms. Jumagul Egemberdieva, and the Head of Jalal-Abad Department on Passport, Visa, and Registration.  

In the course of the meetings, the issues of future collaboration between UNHCR and Government structures had been discussed. The discussion focused on issues of consolidation of peacebuilding efforts through UNHCR small scale projects, support to the state agencies to prevent and eradicate statelessness, protection of refugees, and common actions in the field of Emergency Preparedness.
At the same time, Ms. Shinohara had a meeting with the UNHCR Project Implementing partners  such as “For Tolerance International“, “Abad”, “Spravedlivost’”, “Fergana Valley Lawyers without Borders”, and “Center for Support of International Protection” to discuss the ongoing activities as well as plans for the current and next years.

She also visited a number of projects sites together with the Head of Territorial Council “Kurmanbek”, which benefitted from results of the UNHCR Peacebuilding Project “Building trust and confidence among people, communities and authorities”.
