Sri Lanka: Lena’s story
When the conflict reached her town in Sri Lanka, pregnant Lena, with her 4-year-old son in tow, went in search of her husband, who was working in another town. The conflict intensified while she was away, and Lena could not return to the village where she had left her daughter in the care of her grandmother. She and her husband decided she should escape with their son, hoping they would be reunited quickly. But Lena's husband died suddenly and she had no way to return. Two decades after they escaped, Lena returned to home and was reunited with her daughter.
