INTRODUCTION TO UNHCR
The United Nations General Assembly established the Office of the United Nations HighCommissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on December 14, 1950. The agency is mandated tolead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problemsworldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It alsohas a mandate to help stateless people.
In more than six decades, the agency has helped tens of millions of people restart theirlives. Today, a staff of some 6,600 people in more than 110 countries continues to helpabout 34 million persons. To help and protect some of the world’s most vulnerable people inso many places and types of environment, UNHCR must purchase goods and servicesworldwide.
