About Us

Australia for UNHCR is an Australian charity that raises funds to support the work of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Australia. Our purpose is to provide life-changing humanitarian support to refugees and other displaced and stateless people who come under the care and protection of the UN Refugee Agency.

As well as providing emergency relief like shelter, food, water, and medical care, our generous supporters improve refugees' future opportunities, providing infrastructure, schools, and income generating projects. Our monthly donors also provide vital funding for UNHCR's Emergency Response Teams who are on the ground saving lives within 72 hours, whenever and wherever crisis strikes. About Refugees

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, cares for refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), asylum-seekers, returnees, and stateless people. There are currently over 52 million refugees and displaced people worldwide.

Refugees are people who have been forced to flee their homes by conflict or persecution. They are unwilling or unable to avail themselves of the protection of their own government, and must seek protection in another country. Read more about refugees.

What We Do

UNHCR, the world's leading humanitarian agency and charity for refugees, helps refugees and displaced people at every stage of their ordeal.

  • In emergencies, UNHCR provides emergency shelter, food, water and medical care.
  • In established refugee camps and communities, UNHCR strives to improve refugees' quality of life and future opportunities, providing infrastructure, schools and income generating projects.
  • When they are able to return, UNHCR gives refugees assistance with transport, documentation, and essential items to make the transition as smooth as possible.
  • Once they are home, UNHCR provides ongoing support and education to help refugees rebuild their communities and their livelihoods.
