About Australia for UNHCR

Australia for UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency’s national partner in Australia, raising awareness and funds to support UNHCR’s global emergency response to humanitarian crises. It achieves this through the generosity of Australian individual donors, trusts, foundations and other organisations who donate to and partner with Australia for UNHCR to support its goals.

These contributions from Australian individuals and groups lead to direct impact on the ground during humanitarian crises, helping UNHCR deliver emergency support such as shelter, protection, clean water, food and medicines. As well as supporting UNHCR’s emergency response, Australia for UNHCR also empowers Australians to directly fund projects that support longer-term care such as building schools, running livelihood programs and providing healthcare.

Australia for UNHCR fundraises in many ways, with regular donations from everyday Australians underpinning much of its work. Other fundraising includes supporting community events, corporate partnerships and foundation work. Australia for UNCHR also delivers education and advocacy initiatives to raise public awareness of the plight of displaced people around the world and UNHCR’s work to protect and care for them. Australia for UNHCR was established in 2000 and has grown to be one of UNHCR’s top ten private sector contributors globally, ahead of many governments and institutions. In 2015, Australia for UNHCR raised $32.8 million to support UNHCR’s urgent humanitarian responses across the world.

The United Nations Refugee Agency

Established in 1951, UNHCR provides and coordinates international relief for refugees and displaced people, offering them protection and assistance at every stage of their ordeal. As well as delivering emergency shelter, food, water and medical care, UNHCR strives to improve refugees’ quality of life and ensure them future opportunities. This includes providing infrastructure, schools and income generating projects in established refugee camps and communities.
