UNHCR assisted schools with computer equipment

14 April, UNHCR, Bishkek – Today UNHCR Representation in the Kyrgyz Republic provided technical assistance to two schools in Bishkek. The assistance is aimed at strengthening capacity of local schools attended by refugee children and enhancing students’ computer literacy and skills.

In 2014, UNHCR partner Sezim met with principals of schools where refugee children study and discussed children’s educational needs. UNHCR considered positively their proposal to provide these schools with technical equipment. Namely, secondary schools #4 and #11 received computers, printers, projectors, scanners, and office furniture. Although both schools have computer labs, students have limited access to them because of the tight schedule of the labs. More than 1000 students, including refugee children, will benefit from UNHCR technical assistance.

At the official handover ceremony, principal of the school # 4 said that new addition, which comprises 12 desktop computers, will allow the students greater access to technologies. “We understand that in this modern world, our students must have computer skills to form a solid platform for educational achievements and skills acquisition. Therefore, one of our goals is to increase number of computers in every class and I can say we are on the good track to achieve this goal’, said Ilita Pak, Principal of the School #4.

Nowadays it is important to have basic knowledge about IT because computers are used practically everywhere.  Refugee children need computer literacy to be competent enough in labor market after the graduating schools.
