Serving up historic firsts for Kosovo and the Czech Republic, an emotional win for Brazil, Japan’s return to the limelight and a second gold for a French legend, the Rio 2016 judo competition had it all.

Day after day, crowds filled the stands and lapped up the high quality content on offer at Riocentro Pavilion 6, as boxers from Uzbekistan, Cuba and France shone in the men’s boxing competitions.

France’s Denis Gargaud-Chanut, Great Britain’s Joseph Clarke, Spain’s Maialen Chourraut and Slovakian cousins Ladislav and Peter Skantar topped the four podiums in the Rio 2016 canoe slalom events, held at the Deodoro Whitewater Arena.

The women’s boxing competition at Rio 2016 served up an exhilarating array of action across three weight categories. Great Britain’s Nicola Adams and Claressa Shields of the USA retained the flyweight and middleweight titles they won in London in 2012, while France’s Estelle Mossely gave her country a maiden boxing gold in the lightweight category.

China’s athletes won gold in seven of the eight diving events at Rio 2016, the only exception being the men’s synchronised 3m springboard, where Great Britain’s Jack Laugher and Chris Mears took the honours.

Generating excitement aplenty on the host city’s most famous beach, the Rio 2016 beach volleyball competitions left the local fans feeling mixed emotions. While Germany’s Kira Walkenhorst and Laura Ludwig beat Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas de Freitas to the women’s gold, home favourites Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt got the better of Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo to win the men’s title.

The Republic of Korea completed the first clean sweep in Olympic archery since the introduction of the team events at Seoul 1988, winning all four golds on offer at Rio 2016, with individual men’s and women’s champions Ku Bonchan and Chang Hyejin claiming two apiece.

The USA retained their women’s water polo crown at Rio 2016, while world champions Serbia defeated neighbours Croatia to win the men’s title for the first time.
