Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today reiterated the need for international organizations to continue supporting the poverty reduction efforts of the Central African Republic (CAR), one of the world's poorest nations.
The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the African Development Bank are among the participants at a two-day round-table meeting starting today in Brussels.
In a statement marking the roundtable's opening, a UN spokesperson said: "The Secretary-General appeals to partners to continue to support the Central African Republic in the implementation of its comprehensive poverty reduction strategy towards addressing its peacebuilding and socio-economic development challenges."
The roundtable was called after CAR completed legislative and presidential elections in January and March and follows by a few days the signing of a ceasefire agreement between the Government and the Convention of Patriots for Justice and Peace (CPJP), the only armed group not to have signed the June 2008 Libreville Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The CAR poverty reduction strategy concentrates on security, peace, governance, the rule of law, economic revival, regional integration, and essential social services.
