UNHCR relies almost exclusively on voluntary contributions to fund its operations around the world. This includes financial support that enables us to quickly provide protection and humanitarian relief to people forced to flee, improving their lives through the provision of essentials such as shelter, health care, food security, water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as access to education.
Cash donations allow UNHCR's global programmes to continue and are vital to maintain our capacity to address both new emergencies and forgotten crises. They also give us the flexibility to ensure that critical protection and assistance activities are delivered quickly and without interruption.
One excellent example is our strategic partnership with the Educate A Child (EAC) Programme of the Education Above All Foundation, which has helped hundreds of thousands of refugee children attend schools in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Since 2012, EAC has committed more than USD 76 million dollars in cash donations to UNHCR primary education activities in Chad, Ethiopia, Iran, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Uganda and Yemen.
Another example is our ongoing strategic partnership with the IKEA Foundation that, since 2010, has made contributions to UNHCR’s operations worth USD 200 million dollars, making IKEA our largest private sector partner.
