Madrid, 31 March 2000 - After deliberation by the Spanish Council of Ministers, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) today received from King Juan Carlos I ‘El Collar de la Orden de Isabel la Católica’, one of Spain’s highest distinctions.
The Collar de la Orden de Isabel la Católica, the rules of which were approved by the Spanish Council of Ministers in November 1998, is awarded to individuals whose conduct has shown them to be exemplary citizens.

The IOC President said that he was honoured to receive this award. "For me, it is a great honour that my country recognizes and appreciates what I have done throughout a life devoted above all to sport”, he said.
