Vancouver 2010: designer for sliding centre announced
The Vancouver Organising Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) has announced that Stantec Architecture Ltd. Vancouver will design the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton venue that will host the 2010 Winter Games. Stantec will provide general site engineering services for the Whistler Sliding Centre that will be located on Blackcomb Mountain. Stantec will also provide VANOC with a detailed design and site master plan for the venue.
130 km/h in front of 12,000 spectators
Construction on the sliding centre is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2005 with a completion date sometime in the autumn of 2007. This will allow athletes to train at the venue and test events to be held there prior to the 2010 Games. The track has a proposed running length of approximately 1,400 metres and will have 16 bends. The races will last some 52 seconds, as speeds in excess of 130 km/h are expected to be reached. The venue will also include a storage area for 50 sleds and has a proposed capacity of 12,000 spectators.
An experienced team
The Stantec team has a lot of experience in the complex task of building sliding centres, with many of the members having already participated in the design of the Salt Lake City sliding centre for the Games in 2002. The core team includes: Stantec Architecture, Stantec Consulting, Stonefield Development, Van Boerum Frank Associates, Inc. and R.H. Strong Associates Inc.
Vancouver 2010
Vancouver will host the XXI Olympic Winter Games from 12 to 28 February 2010. The mountain events will take place in Whistler, and Whistler will also host the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from 12 to 21 March 2010.
