IOC Executive Board hears Organising Committee reports

The IOC Executive Board (EB) today heard reports on the progress of the current three Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs): Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012.

A report on Beijing 2008 was made by IOC Coordination Commission Chairman Hein Verbruggen, who followed a very detailed presentation on the state of the Beijing Organising Committee (BOCOG)’s progress made by BOCOG. The EB then heard an update on the Vancouver Games from the Organising Committee of the Vancouver 2010 Games (VANOC), whose delegation was led by CEO John Furlong. The IOC report was made by the IOC’s Executive Director for the Olympic Games Gilbert Felli. The morning was rounded-off by a report on the London Games by Coordination Commission Chairman Denis Oswald.

For each of the Games, the feedback given from the IOC side was very positive, with each edition continuing to progress well, as they work towards holding

top-level Games. The reports from the BOCOG and VANOC delegations showed that, while there were still some challenges to be faced, they were both moving well towards achieving their objectives and were gearing-up to welcoming the world in 2008 and 2010.

During the VANOC presentation, the IOC President suggested to VANOC to host the IOC’s Executive Board towards the end of 2009, which VANOC warmly welcomed. This meeting would allow the members of the EB to visit the 2010 Host City just before Games time in order to get a feel for Vancouver and experience the growing excitement around the Games. The visit of the EB to a host nation before the Games is a traditional part of hosting the Games.
