Governance, legal and venue funding take centre stage at Candidate Cities 2024 workshops
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today wrapped up four successful days of individual workshops with the four cities competing to host the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad in 2024 – Los Angeles (USA), Rome (Italy), Budapest (Hungary) and Paris (France).*
The workshops were held in Lausanne from 12 to 15 July and focused on Stage 2 of the Candidature Process: Governance, Legal and Venue funding. They were led by Associate Director - Olympic Candidatures Jacqueline Barrett, with the participation of experts in the relevant fields.
The content was identical for each Candidate City and focused on the following areas:
- Financial matters (OCOG budget and capital investment budget)
- Governance and legal matters
- Marketing
The discussions allowed the participants to fully address any relevant points and to assist the cities to continue building solid projects which fit with the long-term development plans of the city and region and will leave a sustainable legacy.
Jacqueline Barrett said: “Following the successful implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020, we are delighted with this week’s workshops with the Candidate Cities 2024 and the fruitful and in-depth discussions that took place. The workshops provided an excellent forum for open dialogue between the Cities and the IOC and fully demonstrated the true spirit of partnership. They form part of the IOC’s new philosophy in assisting cities to put forward their best individual value proposition, in line with the long-term development of the city and region, reflecting the unique context of each candidature.”
The workshops and course-correction concept are new to the Candidature Process Olympic Games 2024 and stem from Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement. The first Candidature Process launched since the adoption of Olympic Agenda 2020 features a significant shift in philosophy, with a focus on continued dialogue, simplicity and transparency, and reinforcing alignment between a city’s long-term development plans and the Olympic Games.
The Candidature Process is composed of three stages over two years leading up to the election of the host city for the Olympic Games 2024, in Lima, Peru, in 2017. The three stages are:
- Stage 1: Vision, Games Concept and Strategy
- Stage 2: Governance, Legal and Venue Funding
- Stage 3: Games Delivery, Experience and Venue Legacy
The deadline for submission of the Candidature File Stage 2: Governance, Legal and Venue Funding is 7 October 2016. For Stage 3: Games Delivery, Experience and Venue Legacy, the deadline is 3 February 2017. At the end of stages one and two, following an update by the Working Group, the EB confirms the transition of the cities through to the next stage.
During Stage 3, an IOC Evaluation Commission will make a working visit to each City to study their projects in detail and issue a final report.
