Amateur exploits
Michael Jordan represented the United States at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, just before he turned professional with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA. Jordan led the US team in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game. They claimed gold, going undefeated throughout the tournament and winning by an average of 32 points per game.
Dream Olympic performance
NBA professionals were allowed to play in the 1992 Barcelona Games and Jordan was a key part of the US “Dream Team”. He was the team's second highest scorer with 14.9 points per game and made a tournament-high 37 steals. When the US defeated Croatia 117-85 in the final, Jordan earned his second Olympic gold medal.
A legend is made
Jordan’s reputation as the greatest basketball player in history is rarely disputed. He was voted the NBA's most valuable player of the year five times; he led the league in scoring ten times; and he led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships.
Lasting legacy
Having already retired twice and returned both times, Jordan retired definitively from the NBA in 2003. He finished his career with a record average of 30.12 points a game, the highest in NBA history. In honour of his achievements, his trademark number 23 jersey was retired by the Chicago Bulls.
