Chad: Nigeria’s Separated Children

"I will take care of Muhamud like my own child"

“I take care of them, I feed them, I sleep with them. We are living as one family.”

Thousands of refugees have fled insurgents’ attacks in north-eastern Nigeria in the past weeks and sought safety in Chad. They include at least 100 children who have been provided shelter by other families.

“I will take care of Muhamud like my own child, if I get support I will be grateful. I will try my best and if his father is found I will give him back”

Nigerian refugees arrive on the shore of Baga Sola, Chad, in February, after their villages in Nigeria were attacked. Chadian authorities are transporting them by pirogues from islands where they have been hiding from Nigeria insurgents to safer areas. They will be transferred to the Dar-es-Salam camp, 12 kms away from Baga Sola. Several children got separated from their parents during the flight. © UNHCR / OLIVIER LABAN-MATTEI
