Pyeongchang children are the first to meet Soohorang

Soohorang, the new mascot for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, thrilled a group of Korean schoolchildren today at the first stop in a promotional tour that will include a visit to Rio de Janeiro.

The friendly white tiger met more than 150 students at the Hoenggye Elementary School, along with former and current athletes from the Republic of Korea’s national team, including 2010 Olympic figure skating champion Yuna Kim, an Honorary Ambassador for the PyeongChang Games. Soohorang was announced as the mascot in June, but today's school visit was the tiger’s first public appearance. Judging from the children’s reaction, Soohorang will become a popular ambassador for PyeongChang 2018.

The event offered children a variety of opportunities to learn more about the sports that will be featured at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, as well as a chance to explore their own athletic potential. Students participated in interactive demonstrations led by professional athletes to experience some of the Games’ exciting winter sports, including luge and a virtual reality ski jump.
