Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kristian Jensen, visits Kakuma Refugee Camp
KAKUMA, 16 December 2015 – The Minister was on his first visit to the camp and was accompanied by a delegation comprised of officials from the Danish Government including an Ambassador and Under-Secretary for Global Politics and Security.
The Minister paid a courtesy call to the Sub-County Commissioner’s office before heading to the camp where he visited several key facilities such as the reception centre, a youth community centre and Danish Refugee Council Kenya Programme centre in Kakuma 4.
He was able to interact with refugees in the camp and even sat in a session conducted by the Kakuma Youth Parliament where members discussed various topics of concern such as early child marriage, SGBV, girl child education and peaceful coexistence. The sessions are made possible through funds from Danish Church Aid.
The Minister encouraged the youth to keep taking ownership of their lives and commended them for being positive and responsible for their future. He also reiterated the Danish Government’s support for refugee operations globally and specifically in Africa.
