NAIROBI, Kenya, 16th June 2015 (UNHCR) – UNHCR supports the Day of the African Child 2015 themed ‘End Child Marriage in Africa’.

“55% of refugee population are children. Despite the many gaps and challenges, UNHCR is grateful for the services available to all children including refugee children who are also at risk of child marriages.” Catherine Hamon-Sharpe, UNHCR Assistant Representative (Protection). Harmful practices such as early child marriages have a negative impact on the children contributing to devastating effects. The harmful practices compromise the chance of children getting educated therefore perpetrating illiteracy. We laud the government of Kenya for protecting the refugee children through the Refugees Act of Kenya.
