UK Secretary of State for International Development, Justine Greening in Kakuma Refugee Camp

KAKUMA, April 25 2016 – The UK Secretary of State for International Development, Justine Greening, visited Kakuma refugee camp in Nothern Kenya. She was accompanied by the Turkana County Governor Josphat Nanok, UNHCR Country Representative Raouf Mazou, WFP Country Director Annalisa Conte among others. Besides visiting the IRC Hospital in Kakuma IV, she also met with refugee traders as well as representatives from the host community led by the area Member of Parliament.

Through the Department For International Development (DFID), the UK funds refugee operations in Kenya for child protection, education, health, livelihoods as well as food and nutrition. It is also contributing towards Bamba Chakula – a new program that is providing a monthly electronic cash transfer to refugees and allows them to purchase some food items in the local markets. Over the years, DFID has supported innovative solutions that enhance delivery of services while equally ensuring sustainable livelihoods and empowerment of refugees and host communities.
