「逃げるしかなかったんだ」
ヤコブ 、16才：「アフガニスタンにいた頃、弟のナエムとヤズダンは学校にお弁当を持ってきてくれた。弟たちは耳が不自由で、学校には行っていなかったから山で放牧をしていたんだ。
今はここパキスタンで、僕たちは自立した生活を送っている。ナエムが料理担当なんだ。ナエムは料理をするのが大好きで、とても上手だからいいシェフになると思う。色んな料理を作ってくれるけど、なかでもナエムの作るマトンカレーは絶品だね。
僕の夢は、ナエムをを料理の学校へ通わせてあげることなんだ。聞くことも話すこともできないけど、頭がよくて、飲み込みが早いから大丈夫さ。いつか自分たちの家を持って、お金が貯まったらレストランを開きたいんだ。」

Naeem is multi-talented: he is not only a great cook but also a tailor. His newest hobby is recycling waste material. He made these flip-flops using milk packaging. (c) UNHCR/ D.A. Khan/2015

16才のヤコブ 、14才のナエムと11才のヤズダンは、アフガニスタンで生まれた。
2010年にタリバンによる脅威を逃れパキスタンのクエッタに避難した。3兄弟の父は2012年にオーストラリアを目指し危険な航海に挑んだが、クリスマス島の近くで船が転覆し、溺れてしまった。
UNHCRに保護された兄弟は、夢を抱きつつ現在イスラマバードで生活している。
