Reports from Herat say some 200 demonstrators tried to storm Iran's consulate in the western Afghan city in protest at the alleged killing of Afghan immigrants by Iranian security forces.
Reports say the crowd threw rocks and broke the consulate's windows before security forces drove them back by firing warning shots into the air.
At least three protesters were reported injured in the clashes.
The demonstrators called on Tehran to hand over the bodies of 13 Afghans who they say crossed the border into Iran, where they were seized and shot dead by Iranian security forces some three months ago.
More than 2 million Afghan refugees and illegal immigrants live in Iran.
