Sources consulted by the Research Directorate, including the Embassy of Sudan in Ottawa and the War Resisters' International were unable to provide any current information on the penalty for desertion. However, SDN4218.E of 15 March 1990 may be of interest.

An official in charge of the national service declared that Sudan would set up a special tribunal for young deserters (AFP 12 June 1998). Citing an independent newspaper, a 5 September 1996 AP article states that men who avoid doing their national military service would be denied a work permit.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
