UNHCR welcomes announcement of Independent Paralympic Team comprising two refugees
UNHCR , 26/08/2016
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, warmly welcomes today’s announcement by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) of two refugees who will compete as a team in the upcoming 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The participation of a first-ever refugee team in the Paralympic Games is an example of what can be accomplished when refugees with disabilities are given the opportunity to pursue their dreams and apply their skills. While all forcibly displaced people face challenges, those with disabilities are often at heightened risk because they are less likely to be involved in decisions that concern them, face numerous barriers to accessing assistance, and thus risk having their key protection needs go unmet. As such, promoting their active inclusion and full participation in society – including through sports – is key to their protection and well-being. “The Independent Par...

End of large scale pre-registration on mainland Greece
UNHCR / Greek Asylum Service / EASO, 01/08/2016
Athens, 1 August 2016 The Asylum Service announces that the operation to pre-register applications for international protection on mainland Greece, through the dedicated registration centres that were temporarily set up, has now come to an end. Those who have not been able to pre-register yet and wish to apply for asylum can do so, preferably by obtaining a registration appointment through Skype. Given that the vast majority of those who wish to pre-register have done so by now, access to the Skype system should function more efficiently. Those who have been already pre-registered will receive soon a text message (SMS) with the date and location for their next appointment at the Asylum Service to lodge their asylum claim, including for family reunification or relocation. The pre-registration exercise, supported financially by the European Commission, was launched on 8 June 20...

By: William Spindler | 1 July 2016 | A large-scale exercise to pre-register asylum seekers on mainland Greece was launched on 8 June 2016 by the Greek Asylum Service with UNHCR’s support. It will also identify persons with specific needs so that they may be referred to the appropriate organizations and re...

GREECE: UNHCR concerned at conditions in new refugee sites and urges that alternatives be found
UNHCR, 27/05/2016
UNHCR is seriously concerned about sub-standard conditions at several sites in northern Greece where refugees and migrants were evacuated this week from the makeshift site at Idomeni, and urges the Greek authorities, with the financial support provided by the European Union, to find better alternatives quickly. UNHCR agrees that the makeshift site at Idomeni on the Greek border with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, where refugees had been staying in abysmal conditions, needed to be evacuated, and notes that this has been completed without the use of force. However, the conditions of the some of these sites to which the refugees and migrants are transferred fall well below minimum standards. Some of the refugees and migrants who had been living in Idomeni have been moved into derelict warehouses and factories, inside of which tents have been placed too tightly together. ...

Horrified shipwreck survivors watched as hundreds drowned
UNHCR, 02/05/2016
ATHENS, Greece, May 2 (UNHCR) – All Yasin Osman Ibrahim and his three-year-old son Abdulrahman could do was watch in horror as more than 500 migrants and refugees drowned two weeks ago, in one of the Mediterranean's worst shipwrecks in modern history. Clutching Abdulrahman to his chest, Yasin stood on the deck of a wooden boat as the sea swallowed hundreds aboard a sinking, overcrowded larger boat to which people smugglers were trying to transfer them. The screams were deafening. Almost no one could swim. Yasin, a 24-year-old Somali who had been living in a refugee camp in Yemen, searched desperately for his five relatives among the flailing people in the water. "We thought we would die, too," he said. "We thought, 'We are next'." Yasin lost four relatives that day: two female cousins, one male cousin, and a cousin's three-month-old daughter. Another cousin, 28-year-old Mol...

Syrian refugee carries Olympic flame through Athens
UNHCR , 26/04/2016
ATHENS, Greece, April 26 (UNHCR) – Syrian refugee Ibrahim Al-Hussein carried the Olympic flame through an Athens centre for refugees on Tuesday evening as part of the torch relay for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. The symbolic gesture was intended to show solidarity with the world's refugees at a time when millions are fleeing war and persecution worldwide. It was a proud moment for the 27-year-old refugee and athlete, who resumed swimming and basketball last year in Greece after his promising sports career in Syria was cut short by war -- and a 2012 bombing that led to the amputation of his right leg below the knee. Ibrahim now walks with a prosthetic. Hundreds of refugees gathered around him as he walked with the flame held high through Eleonas, the Athens centre housing some 1,500 asylum-seekers. Ibrahim smiled even as he was mobbed by media cameras and refugees taking s...
